Does the hate crime laws violate the 14th amendment?

A hate crime is a crime against a person based on their race, uality, or religious belief. ".. nor deny any person within it's jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." says it all. To me this mean, ANY person (regardless of , race, religion or ual preference) is entitled to equal protection of the laws. Hate crime laws simply make it more severe to hurt a person for no reason other than hate. How, then, can hate crime laws violate this amendment?
